21st Annual Mountain Valley Cluster Dog Show
Roanoke Kennel Club James River Kennel Club New River Valley Kennel Club The Roanoke Kennel Club, the oldest American Kennel Club affiliate in Virginia, is proud to co-host the 21st Annual Mountain Valley Cluster Dog Show These five (5) days of shows feature approximately 150 different AKC recognized dog breeds each day. This year, we are anticipating over 5,200 total event entries for the 5-day show. The competition begins each morning at 8:00am, with eight (8) rings of Breed competition throughout the day, followed by the Group competitions, then Best in Show. On Wednesday, the James River Kennel Club will conduct Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Community Canine (CGCA) test. Open to the public, these test will begin at 4:00pm. On Thursday, the James River Kennel Club will offer various health care screenings for dogs. These clinics will include Eye Certification (8:00am to 5:00pm) and a Cardiac Clinic (8:00am to 4:00pm). These clinics will be conducted by DVMs from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. New this year … Barn Hunting! Barn Hunting is an old sport that awakens the natural hunting instincts in dogs. Friday evening, a Barn Hunting Seminar and a “Instinct” Simulation will be offered. On Saturday, dogs will have the chance to search a small, fenced-in area for rats in tubes hidden among hay bales. These events are conducted in a very controlled and safe setting, with no physical contact between dog and rat. Saturday afternoon, beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of Best in Show, is the Roanoke Kennel Club “Elite Dog” Competition. To qualify for the RKC Puppy Elite Competition, all dogs must be entered and shown in one of the RKC shows on Friday or Saturday. Each evening, approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Best in Show, the Mountain Valley Cluster will offer a variety of “Junior Handlers’ Events”. These fun events are in support of our Junior Handlers … the future of the sport of dogs. Returning this year … Dock Diving! This exciting, fun and entertaining sport whose origins are recognized with dogs leaping into the water to retrieve ducks and geese. These AKC associated events will be conducted each day by North America Diving Dogs and will include both competitive, as well as “My dog can do that!” activities. The public is welcomed to bring their dog to try out “dock diving”. Any breed, any mix, and any size dog may participate. It’s a pool full of fun. Spectators are welcome. Admission and car parking are FREE. Vendors, offering a vast array of dog related merchandise and supplies, will be available. No dogs are sold at the show.
